The community of homeschoolers in India is diverse. Many of them choose to homeschool because they are fed up with this educational system and wish to bring up their kids with practical knowledge about the world. Some families do not want to impose any structure on their children’s education.
Here the parents act as facilitators for their children. They believe that children are mature enough to choose what to learn. In India, the term ‘Homeschoolers’ includes all the parents teaching their children at home in an open environment. As of now, the Government of India has not directly addressed the issue of Homeschooling in black-and-white terms.
Delights of homeschooling
Being a parent can be overwhelming sometimes in the present times. But being a homeschooler allows you to relive your childhood & built an empathic bond with your kids. You get to unlearn and relearn new concepts and approaches. Life is not any more stressful than it would have been to constantly maintain a strict schedule, homework, and exams while trying to juggle a child’s non-academic interests. However, as for kids’ future, we should be happy for them to take the lead in education.
Socializing in the absence of school
Homeschooled children have enough opportunities to socialize with other human beings. Socialization can happen during a field trip or an educational visit to the park. Most homeschoolers will say that only a small portion of homeschooling happens at home. There are endless ways to keep your home learner engaged with others, especially with proper planning. Homeschoolers use creative ways to keep their child socialized, including socially distanced playdates and virtual classes and gatherings. Either way, it can be reassuring to know that educating your child at home is not likely to be detrimental to their overall social development.
Homeschooling is a way of life.
Homeschooling is a lifestyle choice, not just an educational choice. Each family has different modes and styles of homeschooling. Homeschoolers opt to follow a rough routine focusing on practical life work, reading, nature exploration, and physical play.
With homeschooling, you do not learn at set times every day. Learning becomes a way of life. You may have set times for bookwork, but in reality, your children are learning all day long, no matter where you are.
It is as natural as parenting. Because you are around your children all the time, you are the ones they come to with questions. You are the ones who disciple them, train them, and nurture them. Homeschooling happens while we live our lives, and it essentially becomes a way of life. Your child will begin looking forward to each day, which matters more than any academic learning.
Advice for parents
Any parent considering homeschooling whose kids are currently in school can try and use summer vacations as a trial period. They could see if they can live a life without school, if it works for them and if it feels right and then makes a decision. It is okay to take time and not be able to decide immediately too.
